Pornography is a harmful addictive substance. Scroll on to read and watch wisdom from Prophets and apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, along with some alarming statistics of the modern day plague that is sweeping the world.
“Avoid any semblance of pornography. It is dangerous and addictive. If you continue to view pornography, your spirit will become desensitized and your conscience will erode.” –“That We May Touch Heaven”, -President Thomas S. Monson, Ensign, November 1990, pp. 97 | "In our day the dreadful influence of pornography is like unto a plague sweeping across the world, infecting one here and one there, relentlessly trying to invade every home, most frequently through the husband and father. The effect of this plague can be, unfortunately often is, spiritually fatal. Lucifer seeks to disrupt “the great plan of redemption,” “the great plan of happiness.” –President Boyd K. Packer, “Cleansing the Inner Vessel”, General Conference, October 2011, https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2010/10/cleansing-the-inner-vessel?lang=eng |
“Pornography will always repel the Spirit of Christ and will interrupt the communications between our Heavenly Father and His children and disrupt the tender relationship between husband and wife.” –President Boyd K. Packer, “Cleansing the Inner Vessel”, General Conference, October 2010, https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2010/10/cleansing-the-inner-vessel?lang=eng
“Danger lurks when we divide ourselves with expressions such as, “my private life” my “professional life” or even “my best behavior”. Living life in separate compartments can lead to internal conflict and exhausting tension. To escape that tension, many people unwisely resort to addicting substances, pleasure seeking, or self indulgence, which in turn produce more tension, thus creating a vicious cycle.” –“Living by Scriptural Guidance” Elder Russell M. Nelson, Ensign, November 2000, pp. 17 | “Hence, I warn against pornography. It is degrading of women. It is evil. It is infectious, destructive, and addictive. The body has means by which it can cleanse itself from harmful effects of contaminated food or drink. But it cannot vomit back the poison of pornography. Once recorded, it always remains subject to recall, flashing its perverted images across your mind, with power to draw you away from the wholesome things in life. Avoid it like the plague!” –Elder Russell M. Nelson, “Our Sacred Duty to Honor Women”, Ensign, May 1999, pp. 39 |
“Satan promotes counterfeit love, which is lust. It is driven by a hunger to appease personal appetite. One who practices this deception cares little for the pain and destruction caused another. While often camouflaged be flattering words, its motivation is self gratification.” –“Making the Right Decisions”, Elder Richard G. Scott, Ensign, May 1991, pp. 35
“I plead with you boys tonight to keep yourselves free from the stains of the world. You must not indulge in sleazy talk at school. You must not tell sultry jokes. You must not fool around with the Internet to find pornographic material. You must not dial a long distance telephone number to listen to filth. You must not rent videos with pornography of any kind. This salacious stuff simply is not for you. Stay away from pornography, as you would avoid a serious disease. It is as destructive. It can become habitual, and those who indulge in it get so they cannot leave it alone. It is addictive.” “Living Worthy of the Girl You Will someday Marry”, President Gordon B. Hinkley, Ensign, May 1998, pp. 49
“When we breach the seventh commandment, we thus hurt ourselves and others too. When we are unhappy with ourselves, other people suffer. In this sense, there is no sin which is private! Furthermore, lust prevents the development of true love and thereby blocks us from keeping the first and second great commandments.” –Elder Neal A. Maxwell, “Cleanse From Us All Unrighteousness”, Ensign, February 1986, pp. 20.
My Personal Position Statement:
This is a topic is a very sensitive subject to me right now, it probably always will be. The clutches of pornography addiction held my ex-husband so tightly, it eventually lead to my families separation. Because of this evil, my children will never know what it is like to grow up in a home with both their mom and their dad. It’s very sad that something so miniscule and dumb has the power to destroy families. My experience with pornography was a hard experience I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. As his addiction deepened, I watched the man I loved, fall away from my children, his reality and me. I lost my best friend to this modern day plague, a plague “hiding behind smiling eyes.” It is sad how society accepts something that has so much power to destroy families. I hope one day like smoking used to be such an accepted practice, eventually the world will catch on and realize the dangers that come with viewing pornography.
